Mitsubishi Repair: Headlight bulb change, white headlight bulbs, mitsubishi lancer

Question
I have a Mitsubishi Lancer GSR '97, now my headlights are not so britght currently I have the Koito Japan 12v60/55w bulbs, I look for white headlight bulbs in a couple of stores, they had 100w white bulbs there, for about $10. But 1/3 of the store told me that if I want the bulb installed I need relay, or it will burn up. Is this true? Also I just noticed it now that there is some resedue on the reflector of the headlights, I'd like to clean it but I don't know how to take it apart. Can you help with both of my problems? Thanks.

Answer
Marvin: You talk about your head lights not being bright enough, have you checked your alternator and or your battery. Could be one of them is weak and so your head lights would show this. I have met many a car with weak looking head lights. I agree with the stores, if your car is set up for those 12v60/55w you best stay with them. But sometimes some stores will have books that will show you other lights what will work in your car. Such as my son wanted blue lights in his car. Other wise you could put in a relay to safe keep the car, don't know about burning up but it could kick out your headlights if the computer thought it was powering to much juice. Would not be good on a dark night. I know of no way to clean the lights, they are filled with a gas. You are not to touch them with your fingers but rather wear gloves when you change them. You might check with a dealership or shop they might tell you of different headlight you could get.Just a thought on my part. Hope this helps and good luck!
