Mitsubishi Repair: 1.8 to 2.4/ 2.0 turbo motor swap/ Mirage, eclipse spyder, tight squeeze

Question
Will a 2.4 or 2.0 turbo from Galant/ Eclipse swap into my 1.8 Mirage? Im a certified mechanic, just unfamilier w/Mitsu, and can do the work. Just want to make sure it can be done, half shaft and tranny compatibility. Thanks

Answer
Todd,
I've never heard of this being done from an Eclipse to a Mirage.  The closest swap to this I have seen was a 96 Eclipse Spyder engine (that has the 2.4L Chysler engine) being swapped into a 90 Eclipse (with original 1.8L engine).  That swap was done with moderate success.

But for swapping into a Mirage, I definitely would not recommend it with the 2.0L turbo engine.  The tranny probably couldn't take the strain, and I have heard half shafts actually being snapped under the load.  The 2.4L engine may be a tight squeeze and getting proper mounting could be difficult to ensure the engine is balanced.  Since I've never done or heard of that swap myself, I really can't say whether is can be done or not.  My guess would be 'no', but you can check with the various Eclipse forums and ask if anyone has successfully done it.
Good luck!
