Mitsubishi Repair: 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder Convertible, mitsubishi eclipse, convertible tops

Question
We bought a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder Convertible for my son about a month ago.  The convertible top was working fine but now it won't go up or down by itself.  We can hear the motor running like it wants to work but it doesn't.  We tore the back seat and back panels out so we could get to it and look and it appears that the gears that should turn aren't turning like they should.  We aren't sure that is the problem but then again we have no idea what the problem is.  Do you have any idea what it might be or what we should be looking for?

Answer
Tammie,
Without seeing it for myself, this would be pretty difficult to figure out.  Your motor assembly may simply be worn out and is no longer producing enough power to move the top.  But a new motor is around $300-$400 from the dealership.  But it would be a good idea to have a mechanic who has experience with convertible tops to check everything before you have any parts replaced.  Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Good luck!
