Mitsubishi Repair: 96 Mitsubishi Galant, throttle position sensor, mitsubishi galant

Question
Hey,

I have a 96 Mitsubishi Galant ES, automatic. Whenever I'm driving at around 25 mph in city traffic, the car seems to jerk slightly. I had a diagnostic done at AAA car care center and they told me that it's the throttle position sensor (TPS). But a local mechanic told me that he doesn't see any problems with the car. So, now I'm confused. Your advice on this would be real good. Also, I was wondering if replacing the TPS is a critical thing because I'm a student and can't really afford too many repairs.

Thanks a lot !!

Steve

Answer
Steve,
The TPS is important, but if it was really having a problem, it would cause your check engine light (CEL) to come on.  If your CEL does not come on, I wouldn't worry about replacing your TPS.

But having a car thats about 10 years old does require some extra care and strictly routine regular maintenance to be sure your engine runs well at any speed.  Be sure you keep up with all the maintenance schedules as outlined in your owners manual.  This includes oil changes, transmission fluid changes, belt changes, coolant flushes, replacement of ignition components like spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and making sure nothing is leaking.

Keeping those items in mind and keeping up with the maintenance will ensure your car runs well for a long, long time.  All the items I've mentioned are pretty inexpensive and many you should be able to replace yourself.  That will save you lots of money.
Good luck!
