Mitsubishi Repair: Turn Signal turns on High Beams only, high beams, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Anthony,

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT 4 cyl.  When I use the turn signal arm I have to hold it in order to keep the turn signal blinking and it also turns on my high beams.  I am able to turn on the standard headlights, but when I use my blinker the high beams come on also.  In other words I can't drive without my high beams on.  Even when my car is off it is difficult to get the high beams to go off.  What could the problem be and what type of mechanic could I take it too?

Thank You,
Jennifer

Answer
Jennifer,
The switch in your steering column, which controls the turn signals and highbeam lock, may have broke.  High beams still stay on even if the car is turned off, so I would guess the switch is damaged.  Try pushing the turn signal lever forwards towards the front of the car, and then back towards you.  See if you can feel if that lever locking, or if you hear a click.  It may help temporarily.

You could try taking your car to a local mechanic, but my guess would be that price they'd charge would be similar to that of a dealership service charge.  You can call around for estimates, but your best bet may be with the dealership for this fix.
Good luck!
