Mitsubishi Repair: Steering wheel vibration, wheel vibration, wheel alignment

Question
Hi Anthony,

Thanks for all your replies. I promise this is my final question.

I have a 3000GT and when I drive it, the steering wheel begins to vibrate, even at 30mph. The ride is quite choppy and I know there is something wrong. If I go to the dealer with a vague description of the problem, they may take me to the cleaners. I have new struts placed in the car and the ECS is working fine. But this vibration could be anything.

What is the best way to intelligently diagnose the problem?
What are the possible causes?

Thanks

Tony

Answer
Tony,
Feel free to ask as many questions as you wish.

You shouldn't need to see the dealer for this problem.  It sounds like your tires need to be balanced.  A vibrating steering wheel usually means the the front tires need to be balanced.  If you noticed vibration in your seat, that typically means your rear wheels needed to be balanced.  On a more mechanical issue, you could have a worn ball joint and/or tie rod.

I'd recommend finding a shop that specializes in wheel alignment and balancing.  When you go there, tell them you're feeling a vibration in your steering wheel at low speed and that you need a spin balance.  Also ask if they offer free alignment checks.  Have them also do a visual inspection of your ball joints and tie rods.
Good luck!
