Motorcycle Repair: 81 Suzuki GS 450L, sprocket teeth, chain and sprocket

Question
When I ride there my bike jerks when you are cruising anywhere from 0 to 45 mph. If I put it on the center stand in neutral and spin the rear wheel, the chain is loose sometimes but gets tight at other times. I was told that there is a stretch in the chain somewhere and I need a new chain and sprocket. Does that sound right to you?

Answer
Hi Philip,

If the sprocket teeth look okay and are not curving then
they are probably okay. The chain will normally have a tight spot
and the chain should be adjusted so it has some play
in the tight spot as it may change once the bike has some weight put on it.

I would suggest giving it at least 1/2" free play in the tight spot and up to an inch on the looser
part of the chain adjustment. Keep the chain lubed with chain lube.

If the chain when adjusted can be pulled back away from the
rear sprocket teeth more than half the tooth depth then
the chain may be worn and need a replacement.

A chain that is too tight can do expensive damage to the transmission and even the engine.
Better to keep some play in the chain and keep it well lubricated.
