Question
hi my honda has only 19k on clock ex condition got it from museum been out other day on it then got a rattle on left hand side sounded like got some thing caught in chain stopped had a look rode off and 10 miles down road did it again went to bike shop they are clue less can you help ?

Answer
Dave, these engines are fairly stout, so I would go over all the tune-up specs first. Check the valve clearances, as one may have backed off. Clearances are .002" Hopefully, you have plenty of clean oil in it, so it isn't seizing. Adjust the camchain tensioner, so the camchain isn't flopping around inside.

Other possibilities are a loose baffle in the silencer, rotor bolt backed off and is hitting the case cover, excess chain slack or chain with a bad link, drive sprocket damaged. starter clutch springs/rollers broken/loose or starter clutch hub is loose on the back of the rotor.

Listen carefully, to determine if the sound is in the top end or bottom end and start removing stuff. If you pull the left chain cover and engine/stator cover, you should be able to see what is happening.

Early CB160s, which were the basis for this design had issues with the transmission bushing and locating pin shifting causing the gears to clash and not engage properly. But the parts illustration seems to show that they switched from a hollow locating dowel to a solid hard pin to prevent that from happening.
