Answer
Pete,

It sounds like you will have to pull
the right side clutch cover off
to inspect the shifter parts.

The problem may be with the shift
spindle (shaft) assembly.
Check the screw on the end of
the shift drum or barrel as
they sometimes come loose.

With the case off you can
check the shift operation
and see if the shift drum is turning
when you shift. The drum is what
moves the shift forks inside
the transmission which in turn
moves the gears into position.
If the drum turns and you still
have no gears maybe your clutch
is completely gone.
It will be easy to check also
with the case off.

The parts to check are:
-shift spindle shaft and linkage.
-shift drum screw and pins.
-spindle linkage arm spring
-spindle shaft return spring and pin
-shift drum stopper and spring
-shift drum guide plunger
-clutch.
