Motorcycle Repair: Oil Temp, lockhart oil cooler, crankcase

Question
Hi Mike,  I have a 1998 road king FLHRCI, I bought this bike about three years ago and had always noticed that the oil temp never gets past 160 degrees. It has a lockhart oil cooler and an oil/temp dip stick. I checked the dip stick in boiling water and it reads correctly. Bike runs fine just don't understand was the oil is reading that cool in the crankcase. Thanks Bob.

Answer
Your oil is staying to cool from the oil cooler. You need to have a thermostate bypass onthe cooler. That way, when the oil is cold, it will not go through the cooler and get to temp. Once it gets hot, then it will go through the cooler
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
