Motorcycle Repair: 1 5/8th Belt Drive kit. Good or Bad choice?, vent holes, bad decision

Question
I have alot of friends that tell me not to get a belt drive for my 87 FLHTC.  The one I have been looking at fits in my primary cover.  I was also told that the reason Harley only made a few years worth is because the had too many problems getting them to act rite.  My motor is the stock 80" that I just did a top end on. I don't have any upgrades to it. I'm not looking to get alot more horses out of it.  Is there a common problem that makes this a bad decision other than assuring that I get it aligned correctly?  To me it seems that these kits should be made better and out of better materials.

Answer
Harley made the primary belt drive for a few years, but went back to chain drive, due to the belt not lasting as long as the chain. The work well as long as your not a hot rod, you keep oil off it by not having any leaks, and keep it cool by having a primary cover that has vent holes in it.
Good luck and happy riding
