Motorcycle Repair: 2001 heritage softail classic, eagle pistons, harley dealer

Question
QUESTION: When I have been riding and stop for gas I have to let my bike cool down before starting it again because it will start with a grinding noise.  If I let it cool for 15-20 min. it will start right up like normal.  I put in an easy start kit that didn't make a difference.  My dealer says that I may have to drill the heads for compression releases.  It has a 95 kit with high compression screaming eagle pistons.  I have a ultra with the same kit in it and it starts so easy.

ANSWER: When you say you put easy start kit in, what did the kis consist of?

QUESTION: Mike,
The kit consists of a bigger ring and a smaller jack shaft to relieve the load on the starter.  The Harley dealer here in WA said that this is standard with the 96 motors.

Answer
Your grinding noise might be coming from the starter motor. When your riding the bike, the starter motor picks up heat from the motor. The next time you ride, listen at the starter by using a tube to the starter and see if that is where the noise is coming from. If it is then you would have to pull the starter and do an inspection of it. you might have a bearing going out
Good luck and happy riding
