Motorcycle Repair: 1979 kz1300 kawasaki, vacuum line, petcock

Question
I have just purchased this motorcycle. It has mikuni bsw32 carbs, could you tell me what the float height should be set at? Also I am getting gas in the crankshaft what could cause this.  Thanks

Answer
You will need to look in the service manual for the float height settings.

Gas in the crankcase is probably a leaking petcock.

When you park your bike, are you turning the petcock to the off position or does the bike have a vacuum operated petcock?

If the bike has a manual petcock, set it to off and observe if any fuel drips from the tube to the carbs. If there's any fuel dripping, you need to rebuild the petcock (they sell rebuild kits) or replace it.

If the bike has a vacuum operated petcock, there will be a vacuum line from the tap to the intake side of one of the carbs. You need to check for a leak on both the fuel line and the vacuum line, in this case.
