Motorcycle Repair: speedometer, speedometer drive, bike performance

I have a 2000 xl1200c and every now and then while riding, usually around 55 to 65 mph, I'll notice that the speedometer drops off to "0" while riding and then comes back up to the speed that i am moving. Is this an isolated problem or is it part of a larger issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andy... is this a HARLEY question?????

Dunno much about them.... if speedo dies it could be the meter. If it is cable operated, you may have issues with the speedo drive unit or the cable itself.

If the speedometer drive is electric, then it could be either the drive or the meter.

If the bike performance isn't changing, then the issues are confined to the speedo/drive system.
