Motorcycle Repair: Electrical, honda sabre, bill silver

Question
I have a 2005 Honda Sabre 1100cc. The bike is not charging the battery. I know the battery is good, it takes a charge and I also tried another good battery but still had same problem. The battery is only being drained during startup and still has amps left when it won't start but not enough to kick it over. The fuses are all good, and I replaced the regulater/rectifier. I have no electric problems while the bike is running all the lights are bright and fine and it will run for hours without any problems. With a fully charged battery It will start about 5 times before I would need to charge it. I thought it might be the stator but was told that if it was, the bike would not run long and my lights would not work properly. I rode the bike like this from Mexico city to Tampa Florida so I do not think the stator is bad, so if it is not the battery, a short, the regulater or the stator what could it possibly be?
Thank you for any help you may have,
Joseph

Answer
Joseph, the major known issues on Honda 1100s are the stator plug, where it connects to the harness. Those can overheat/melt down, but that usually takes out other components with it. If you can ride the bike for 5 hours the charging system is working fine.

If the battery is more than 2 years old, replace it. If the battery is fresh and won't turn the bike over sufficiently, perhaps your solenoid or starter motor are having issues.
