Motorcycle Repair: rjohnston@barbeckbb.com, v65 sabre, head bolts

Question
I'm looking or the head and crankcase main bolt torque for an 85 V65 sabre.  I've replaced second gear and I don't have the manual for this motorcycle.

Answer
Rich,

they don't list torque specs for common
parts. They advise using the average
torque recommended for the size and grade
of the bolts you are using.

For example:
If your bolt is 6mm thick on the shaft or
threaded part, use 7-9 ft lbs.

8mm bolt is 12-15 ft lbs.
9mm bolt is 22 ft lbs.
10mm bolt is 30 ft lbs.
12mm bolt is 40 ft lbs.

Just measure the bolt and go by
the size for torques.

The specs I listed are safe for
average grade bolts.

Some bolts like alternator rotor
and head bolts may have a higher
grade steel and a higher torque
rating. That is why they list
only those in the shop manuals.

If your head bolts are 9mm they
will be about 32 ft lbs.
The 9mm crankcase bolts are 22 ft lbs.
The 10mm crankcase bolts are 28 ft lbs.
