Motorcycle Repair: 1991 XLH1200 Shifter, harley dealership, home position

Question
Hi, Mike -
This bike only has 25K miles on it.  Out riding twisties when I downshifted and the lever stayed there!  Ouch!

I was able to get it home by being really purposeful with my toe, becuase whether upshift or downshift, the shift lever never returns to 'home' position.

I'm thinking that the spring either broke or jumped.  I checked my HD Service Manual for this, but there are no details ... aaaarrrggghhh!

A few Questions, please:
1.  Any suggestions in general?
2.  Any suggestions as to where I could get detailed repair instructions?
3.  Any suggestions as to where I could find a replacement spring?

Thanks in advance,
Mick <><

Answer
Sounds like you have a broken shifter spring. It is located in the trans. To get to it the trans will have to be pull out and taken apart. Your service manual should tell you how to do the work. the spring can be purchaced at any harley dealership.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
