Motorcycle Repair: carb problems, sportster 1200, flow filter

QUESTION: I have a chop with a 2005 sportster 1200 motor in it.It is coughing,crackling and sputtering during the transition from idle to higher RPM's.It runs fine at either idle or higher RPMS just not the transition,I have never been into one of these carbs before and not sure what to look for.......

ANSWER: Couple of questions. Has it always done this? Have you done any modifications to the motor, like high flow air filter, exhasut? Pull your plugs and let me know what color they are

QUESTION: No,it is a recent development.It does have a high flow filter and an open exhaust.........

Answer
You have either a problem with the ignition or the carb. I would first do a OHMs test on the coil and plug wires to make sure they are good. If they pass then I would check the intake manifold for leaks. Then check the jets in the carb for dirt.
