Motorcycle Repair: Clutch Problem, wet clutch, clutch lever

Question
Mike,

I just purchased a 2004 Ultra Classic from my brother in law in Las Vegas. I work in the NASCAR industry and one of the teams agreed they would bring the bike back from Vegas. With a transfer to our hauler in Atlanta.

Last night the hauler finally dropped the bike off at our shop. My driver said that the other group said they were driving it through the infield with the clutch started acting up and they wound up pushing the bike onto the hauler.

This morning, I found out in the light of day that the bike fell over in the hauler.

After losing my cool over the scratches on the front, I tried to get the clutch to work.

You can put the bike in gear and let the clutch out and it feels like it's trying to grab, but it just slips.

Could it be a clutch problem or could it be that maybe from sitting on it's side for who knows how long, could have saturated the clutch?

Or could it have knocked it out of adjustment. The Bike has an extended warranty, but Harley says.... not on the clutch.

The bike fell on it's right side.... I don't know how long it laid like that.

The bike has been very well taken care of by my inlaws... it only has 8k miles.

My brother inlaw says the bike was driven 12 miles To LV Motor Speedway and had no issues.

I'm heart broke... can't ride it and don't want to be taken on a big ride for a clutch.

Any help ad wisdom would be appreciated

Answer
You have a wet clutch, so it should be satarated.
I would try to adjust the clutch. Loosed the clutch cable so you have alot of play in the clutch lever. Now remove the derby cover over  the clutch, with the bike sitting upright. In the center of the clutch you will see a locknut and adjuster screw. loosen the locknut, and turn the adjuster outward and then slowly inward, just until it bottoms out. Now turn it outward, about 1/8 turn and tighten the locknut and install the derby cover. Go back to the cable and adjust it so you have about 1/8 inch play int he clutch lever and test the bike out. If it still not working then your going to have to pull the clutches and do an inspection on them.
Good luck and happy riding
