Motorcycle Repair: Bendix problem 2001 Roadking Classic, clutch gear, starter button

Question
Starter is making a whinnying sound and is not engaging.  Spoke with the Harley bubba's and they said it sounds like a Bendix problem.  He gave me a schematic to review and my question is: are there any major problems getting to the Bendix to replace or just basic bolt pulling???  I know I have to go into the right side and pull the primary inner/outer to get to the bolt to remove the Bendix... Thanks

Answer
First, you want to make sure that is the problem. Drain the primary fluid and remove the derby cover a the rear of the primary cover. Now looking in there and upward with a flashlight, have somebody hit the starter button. Is the jackshaft sliding outward and engaging the clutch gear? Or is it just spinning and not sliding outward?
