Motorcycle Repair: 1999 FXDL starter problems, starter shaft, clutch assembly

Question
Hi Mike,
I have a 1999 FXDL that I bought new. I went too long before buying a new battery. I started the bike with a weak battery a few times. I got new battery now the starter motor turns good and the solenoid kicks out great. The problem is that the drive doesn't turn. You can hold it with your hand. I think the problem is with the idler gear and bearing. Could you help me with this? I've done the armature and field tests, all that checked out.

Answer
Sounds like the starter needs rebuilt or replaced. It could be either the clutch, the starter shaft or the idle gera that is bad. What you have to do is pull the Drive housing assenble off so you can inspect the gears and clutch assembly for damage.
Happy holidays
Mike
