Motorcycle Repair: 81 sportster oil leak, drive sprocket, lockwasher

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike, I have a problem, when I changed the seal behind the main sprocket I needed no special puller like my book said I would. I changed the seal but still have a leak, I think the main shaft nut is stripped out and maybe not getting tightened down. I took it apart again with no extra tools. Should I be able to pull the sprocket off by hand?    Help!!!

ANSWER: Are you talking about the sprocket coming off the trans?

QUESTION: I'm sorry I did not make myself clear before. I am talking about the big sprocket that the outside chain goes on. I'm a female....

Answer
The sprocket you are refering to is the drive sprocket off the trans.
The seal you are talking about shouldnt need a puller to replace. The seal is inside a metal ring that is held in by 4 bolts. The inside of the sprocket goes throught he seal, which is suppose to keep it from leaking. remove the sprocket and check where the seal rides. If it is worn it wont seal and you might have to replace the sprocket. Also, there should be a special lockwasher behind the mainshaft nut. you have to get the mainshaft nut tight so there or there will be play in the trans. If the mainshaft nut is stripped, then the seal will probably leak, so I would replace it.
