Motorcycle Repair: 2007 VStar 650 Classic charging problem, low beams, vstar 650

Question
My bike, when operated in cold weather, usually temps below 45 degrees, will shut off when idling in traffic, with a dead battery, no start result. It will kick start, but it usually happens when I'm waiting in line, idling up a hill. I have driving lights wired to go on with the low beams. I've been told the bike has carb heaters that draw major current below 50 deg. My question; is there any way to up the alternator output or install a battery with more cranking amps? I have an auto repair background, and I guess I'm thinking of the days when you could do that to a car to give it more cold weather cranking power.
Thanks for any help and advice!

Answer
The charging systems OEM output should be ample for just about anything you attach to it so Id rule that out unless your voltage regulator is bad. What I would check out is to make sure you have the battery the bike calls for rather than just one that fits off the shelf at wal-mart.

Hope this helps!
