Motorcycle Repair: raptor 660, poor insulation, fuel mixture

Question
my raptor has a new battery and it starts right up no problem but once i get to second gear and go to take off it accelerates a little then slows down dose that mean the spark plugs need to be replaced

Answer
Hi Jordan, well, the answer to your question is not necessarily. So it starts OK and ticks over? Have you looked at the plugs yet, although plugs can and do fluctuate in performance depending on load applied, i.e. under acceleration. and how do they look?  Do you mean as soon as you apply a load to the bike, like on accelerating away, it is then it falters, does it just slow right up, and maintain a low speed, or slow to a stop. Some other electrical components can exhibit similar symptoms, the coils for instance under load can fail, either emitting no spark, or so weak it is inefficient in firing the fuel mixture. Perhaps it could be a poor insulation breaking down, either on a lead or an ignition component, the greater the amps pushed though, the more likely the loss through a weak point, then less will get to the plug, if you see what I mean.  On the other hand, it still may be a fuel issue. Have you altered the carbs settings in any way?  Have you done anything recently apart from fitting the battery? And is it a recent fault that has just developed, or have you had it for some time.
