Question

Answer
Chuck,

-you have to check the condition of the
contact points. They need to be shiny
clean and smooth.
-Separately set each set of points on the highest part
of the cam that opens them, you have to turn the engine
to do this. They should
be set to have about .014" gap when fully open.

-Hook up your timing light on plug 1 and turn the whole
points plate (cyl-1&4) until it fires on the "F" mark at idle.

-Hook up to plug 2 and there is an "F" timing
mark for the other points set (cyl-2&3) also. The right set
of points has it's own separate plate
that can be moved without disturbing the
left points once they are set correctly.

-When you speed up the engine (2500rpm) the timing marks
will move between the advance marks if the advance
cam is working okay.

-the important thing is that the points
just break open when the "F" marks align
with the lines on the engine.

-if you have no points gap with the timing set correctly
the heel of the points are worn and will need
replacement.
