Motorcycle Repair: Goldwings Compair, 4x4 shop, old bikes

Question
I bought Two goldwings one 76-1000 ; one 80- gl-1100 both bikes about same condition; mechanical and physical.
1976 has 120 or 140 mph on speedometer 1980 has 85 mph. Is the 76 a stronger eng or faster bike or or is the 80 a safety minded type bike?? I can fix either one but not both. The year is not important to me but just confused on which way to go. Want the one with most POWER NOT SPEED.
I did ask Local Honda Dealer (4X4 shop) had no ideal what I was talking about about 22yr's old guy.   Please note POWER OF EACH IF POSSIBLE; and which was would you go?? Thk's John

Answer
John,

-the later Goldwings were slightly detuned
in an attempt to get more low speed power,
it didn't really help much just made the
top speed lower.

-On the other hand there
were some minor improvements like
better steering head bearings and thicker
engine and rocker covers. Also the
newer models had electronic ignitions
instead of points and condensors.
Some of the parts may be interchangeable.

-The newer one may be better because
of the improvements and may be
easier to find replacement parts.

-The clutch may be easier to get
to on the newer one because the pipes
are a bit smaller I believe.

-They are both great old bikes, the
older may need a bit more maintenance
if it has points ignition.

-The 80 engine is a little bit bigger
which might make up for any detuning
it had on the camshafts.

-I personally like older bikes, I also
don't mind setting points and find
them alot cheaper than replacing electronic
ignition components.

The power really depends on the condition
of the engine and how well it is tuned.
You may to keep the bike with the best
compression or have a leak down test done
to determine the engine wear.
