Motorcycle Repair: 1982 honda cb650 nighthawk, 1982 honda cb650, starter clutch

Question
hello, i own a old cb650 nighthawk and i am in need of some expertise. the bearing assembley that the starter motor plugs into will not turn the motor over, the bike runs great and everything the only problem is i have to push start it and even though i live in florida the cold is coming and its a real pain to get it push started. i have heard that it is because the springs that push the bearings out have rusted closed and thus they wont engage the the motor. what i would really like to know is if there is a kick start made for this bike. i have heard rumors that there is one that comes on a new clutch cover but you cant find them in the u.s.a. so if you have any information on where i can find this kick starter or god forbid it doesnt exist how would i go about replacing the assembley?

Answer
Charles,

I have not heard of any kickstart conversion for these bikes, and the other bad news is that the starter clutch
is inside the engine. The engine has a primary shaft
with a chain on it and also the starter clutch that
has the little rollers and springs.

-I believe you have to pull the lower half of the engine
off to get at it. You may be able to see it if you
remove your oil pan. I don't know if it is possible
to remove the clutch and try to get the shaft
out the bottom, probably easier to pull the engine
and split it.

-If you have some time and a repair manual
you will have a nice project to tackle.

-Check around for parts first as these bikes are
getting old. I believe a new starter clutch assy is
around a hundred dollars. I don't recommend just
the springs as usually it will fail again before long.
Replace the whole thing with new if possible.
