Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Suzuki Bandit 600, suzuki bandit 600, spark plug wires

Question
Hi Danee,

I have a 1996 Suzuki Bandit 600.  It has about 27,000 miles on it.  I use it as my daily transportation to and from work.  I have owned it since early February and have cleaned the air filter, changed the oil and oil filter.  But, I have a weird problem with it that I am hoping is fixable and hoping you can provide some details about what to look for.

Basically, if it is a nice dry day it works fine without any troubles.  Starts right up every time! Though, with living in Hawaii, it rains often.  Recently when it rains, the bike acts really funny.  It won't start or if you get it started you need to keep it around 3-4000 RPMs or it will stall out.  The other day while riding it started to rain and the bike was sputtering a very small amount, and at one time I went to get on the throttle yet I couldn't get above 50MPH while in the rain.  Due to it starting without troubles when it is try out side, this believes me to thinking it is an electrical problem.  Any ideas on what could possibly be the cause of my troubles?

Thanks.
Pete

Answer
To make sure it is the ignition system get yourself a can of "Wire Dry" from the auto parts store and spray down all the ignition electrical components. Then try again. This will tell you if it is the problem or not. The wire dry is like a silicone that will not let the water in. It is used on spark plug wires for cars and works very well. Some electrical components are just not sealed up from the factory.
