Motorcycle Repair: No spark reaching the plugs, spark plug cable, pinion shaft

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike, good afternoon, I have a 1994 Sportster 1200. When riding in a highway mi bike died just like that, pulled over and tried to start it with no luck, after checking we noticed that no spark was reaching plugs, removed spark plug cable and no spark after coil either, took my bike home in a truck. Few days after, I replaced the coil and the ignition sensor located in the cam and nothing, I'm waiting for the ignition module, and I don't know but seems to me that won't fix the problem either...I checked the timing rotor behind the ignition sensor and it doesn't spins when I hit the starter, the starter works but the rotor doesn't spins, is this the way it has to be? or should the rotor only spins when the bike is on? Please help, I'm desperate

The best regards
Luis

ANSWER: When you turnt he key on, do you have 12 volts at the hot side of the coil? Also, when the motor is turning over the rotor should turn.

QUESTION: Hi Mike, thanks for your reply...I found the problem, the pinion shaft is broken..not sure why but will have to buy the Service Manual to replace it...do you have an idea of why it broke?

Answer
If your pinion shaft broke you will have to tear tear the motor down and split the cases and remove the flywheels. The only thing what would make a pinion shaft break is a bearing going on in either the case or the rods
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
