Motorcycle Repair: will not start, compression gauge, pinky finger

Question
hi i have a 125cc dirtbike and the kick starter seems to have no compression and the bike will not start. i can push the kick starter down with my pinky finger with no problem. it wont start while push starting. when i put it on neutral its easy to push the kick start but on other gears its moves the bike itself when i try to kick start. also it moves on every gear but with more resistance the neutral.
thanks.

Answer
Sultan,

-if you have no compression, then it is
most likely engine problems.
Remove the spark plug, hold your
thumb over the hole and kick the starter,
it should blow your finger off the hole.
or better yet, borrow or buy a compression
gauge to test it. Should have around
100 psi for a 2 cycle engine, 150 psi on a 4 cycle engine.
If you know the year, make and model of your bike
I can tell you what type it is.
The engine won't run until you fix the compression
problem, may be a hole in the piston or other
damage.

-on dirt bikes, it is normal for the bike
to move when you kickstart in gear. On most
you can pull in the clutch and the bike
will kickstart ok. On some older bikes,
they need to be in neutral to kickstart.
