Motorcycle Repair: 79 Sportster, dim side, switch tail

QUESTION: I just replaced the taillight on this bike and can't get the brake light to work using front or rear brake system have checked both brake switches but not sure what else to check that might be causing this problem can you please help?

ANSWER: Do you have power at the front and rear brake switches? Using a test light, do you have power going back to the bulb socket?

QUESTION: I checked voltage it is good at brake switch,have good voltage after switch when brake is depressed,unplugged tail light wire under seat and checked voltage there have good voltage when depressing brake. Tail light seems to be very bright tried to switch wires around at switch tail light was dimmer but still no brake light

Answer
Check to make sure you have a two filment bulb. The dim side is the running light. the brake light is brighter. Use your test light at the bulb post and see if you are getting power there. Your taillight might nto be grounded good
