Motorcycle Repair: Waring Lights on a 82 Yamaha Seca, fuse boxes, fuse holders

Question
Hello - My bike is not starting, and I charged the battery, but still nothing. I can honk the horn, but I can't turn any of the lights on. Usually there are three lights that become lit when I turn the key...now only the big red warning light comes on, but I can't find anywhere what it is warning me of! The bike is in good condition...new battery, carb, everything is clean. I also checked the four fuses under the seat and they look okay. The bike makes NO noise when I try to start it. It doesn't make that clicking noise or anything. Please help! thanks.....samantha

Answer
Samantha,

-get a 12 volt testlight or multimeter so you can
check positively that power is getting through
the fuse box. There should be a reset button on
your dash panel to turn off the warning light.

-Double check your battery and all it's connectors.

-The power usually goes from the battery to the main fuse
and on to the kill switch on the handlebars.
Then it goes on to the ignition switch etc. Could be
bad connections along there.

-The warning light could come on if
battery fluid is low, low on gas, low on oil,
side stand down or if any of these sending units
are faulty or stuck. Check all your fluids.

-Try checking any connectors around the fuse box
for corrosion. These bikes have a very large
wiring harness with lots of connectors.

Probably a loose or broken wire or connection
somewhere. Sometimes the fuse boxes go bad
after many years. May have to clean the fuse
holders well with sandpaper or such.
