Motorcycle Repair: Re jetting carbs?, yamaha xj 750, jardine exhaust

Question
Hey Wayne i need some advice. I have a 1982 yamaha xj 750 maxim with 5,300 miles on it. Its been sitting in a garage for years at a time, well i pulled it out of storage this year got it running RUNS AWSOME. But here is my question. The exhaust is really rusy and pitty. it wont clean up so i was going to buy a aftermarket 4 into 1. so do i have to rejet the carbs???? air box is stock. i just want good looking exhaust.also do you prefer Mac or jardine exhaust?

Answer
Dean,
rejetting the carbs is not always necessary, but it
depends on the pipe you buy.
It may be okay to go up a size on the main jet
and raise the slide needle a notch and richen the
idle if needed. If the bike runs too lean, the
heat may cause blueing of the pipe, although
this is usually just thin piping.
I like the jardine because the quality seems consistent.
The mac has a nice low sound though.
Be aware that some pipes will block your oil filter
access, so lookout for that. Also, some pipes
require you to remove your centerstand.
