Motorcycle Repair: 1986 SEi (Electrical), don castro, ase certified mechanic

Question
Hello Wayne, I could really use some help. I recently found an 86' SEi Gold Wing in really great shape. 70K and going strong.

Everything was pretty cool the first week of riding (it was sitting for years) but then after toting a trailer around all day we noticed the parking lights on at all times and in any key position.

I have several lights that come on with key in ON position but I never really use the Park Position so I don't know what came on in Park before trouble.

I was hoping that maybe the Key plug at the bottom of the ignition was somehow stuck in Park but it looked to time consuming to get to so I found a local shop here in California and requested a full Saftey check along with a quick check for the electrical problem.

The shop owner and mechanic is non other than the Infamous Don Castro who by the way Won the Daytona in addition to many other achievments.  It was very cool talking with Don Castro!!! Steve Mcqueen hung out with all those guy's.

Anyway, Don checked her out and found some standard stuff that I expected with a sitting bike but when it came to the electrical I requested the time to stay within two hours for everything.

Had I known then his rate was only $65.00 an hour I would have went further but he ended up removing the bulbs (at my request if things got past two hours) and said I should just reroute my trailer plug to another P lite that does shut off.

Also he stated I still have a draw and' he feels it is more than just the all time computer current.

This was confirmed moments ago because I just went out to fire things up for a ride and I'm Flat Dead in just a few day's.

So' I am hoping this draw is a part of everything else going on and you can pinpoint it by past history of the same maybe???

Please tell me what to do... I am a retired transmission rebuilder and a knotch below an ASE certified mechanic I guess but I'm tired and my time is kinda precious (so I can practice spelling) so if ya got a tip to go forward I would really really really like to know.

Lastley, it would be nice to reinstall the tail lamp bulbs, I have plenty of others but I know by cutting things short like that I am asking for more trouble.

Thankls Man' I look so forward to your reply,

Big Larry

Answer
Big Larry,
some Gold Wings have a reserve lighting unit
that switches brake lights on when taillights
are out etc. That is a possible trouble spot.
I would try pulling some fuses
to see what circuit the problem is on.
If you can trace the wiring to it's source,
maybe you have a relay that is stuck.
If your grounds are missing or poor,
some "live" wire might be grounding through
the park lights.
It might be easier to trace the wires back
as far as possible and reconnect them to
a source that switches on/off like the "man"
Don Castro said.
