in cleaning a black plunger looking thing fell out.           where does it go?

Go to Bike Bnadit's website and view the parts michrofiche for the year of your CX500. Click the link below to view the 1982 model carbs:

I'm not sure which part you're referring about. Look at part numbers 6 and 14.

#6 is the choke starter plunger. It's mostly brass, but has a rubber part on the plunger end.

#14 is the air cut-off diaphragm. Is is rubber with a metal center peice.

The michrofiche is not very clear. You may try clicking another model year and see if the image is clear.
