Motorcycle Repair: 1994 1200 Sportster Rocker Box Removal and Primary Cover Gasket Replacemtn, harley davidson 1200 sportster, clutch cable

Question
Hi Mike,

I have a 1994 Harley Davidson 1200 Sportster with a leak in the front rocker box cover and possibly the rear where the box meets the top of the engine, and from the inner surface of the rocker box.  There are 10,200 miles on the bike and the leak has gotten progressively worse.  I put 450 miles on this weekend and now it is leaking pretty bad and making a huge mess.  I have looked at a couple of questions regarding this subject but I am wondering:  How in the heck do you get the left rear rocker box bolt out of rear rocker box?  Someone told me I would need to drop the engine, which I am not sure if I am comfortable doing.  Any tricks you have learned to make the gasket replacement go easily?

I also now have a leak coming from the bottom front of my primary cover.  How hard is it to remove the primary cover and clutch cable from the primary and replace the gasket?  Will I need to re-adjust the clutch cable?

I am pretty mechanically inclined, but do you recommend bringing the bike in and paying about $300 or is it something that can be accomplished in my garage?  Thank you so much.

      Shiny side up,

          Tom

Answer
On the rocker boxes. You do not have to lower the motor. the bolt will come out, its just a tight fit.
On the primary. You dont have to remov ethe clutch cable to remove the cover. You just have to remove the adjuster under the inspection cover, take the bolts out and remove the cover.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
