Motorcycle Repair: engine shutting off, american ironhorse, petcock

My 2001 American Ironhorse Tejas, that I bought a week ago ran fine for 200 miles. Yesterday it shut off after 10 minutes of riding. Since then it may run for 30 seconds to 5 minutes before dying. If I turn the key off and back on, it usually starts again for same amount of time. While running it seems to run a little rougher than it did before this happenned. I checked petcock and fuel filter which seem clear. Any ideas?

Hi Frank.

This could be a number of things.  Clogged fuel filter, oil system issue, bad plugs, or electrical issue.

 Check the ignition system for shorts, bad connections, bad fuses or fuse connections.  Then check everything else that I mentioned.
