Motorcycle Repair: carbs1981 yamaha 920, speed settings, carbs

my yamaha has been backfireing threw the exhaust.What would the low speed settings be the carbs are the HSC40 carbs can you help me.Thanks Ray.

Hi Ray.

Backfiring is not a carb issue, but a timing issue.

When did you last synchronize the carbs?

On the Virago, they normally are self-timing.  When the carbs are in synch, the timing resets to normal.  In addition to that, there is the possibility that the valves may need adjustment, which is another issue which can cause backfiring.  Get your repair manual out and follow the steps to check the valve gap and timing as well as the carb synchro and see what happens.
