Motorcycle Repair: Oil leaking from lower area of rear pushrod housing, wood pencil, size holes

Question
Thanks Mike,

I did  a little more investigating on my end and this is what I found.

If I put the old "stock" breather back on  the bike again then the oil leaking out of the rear lower pushrod seal area goes away.

This is leading me to think this is compression problem related to the new screamin eagle breather I installed...not a bad seal.

I reviewed the instructions that came with the screamin eagle breather kit and I did install it correctly.

I was perplexed as to what the problem could be between the two breathers until I looked at the the breather screws from each kit.
I think I found the problem but would like your opinion.

The holes through the old stock "breather" screws are about the size of a pencil in side on BOTH ends.

On the new screamin eagle breather kit the breather screws are a different diameter on each end.

On the new breather screws...the outside end hole(air filter side) is the same exact size and diameter as the old "stock" brether screws (size of a pencil).
But the inner end of the breather screw (side that screws into the head) is totally solid accept for very small hole (about the size/diameter of the lead inside a wood pencil )drilled out in the very middle.

This seems very suspect to me.
I don't understand why the inner hole on the new breather screw is so incredibly small compared to the outer end?

I think hardly any air is coming through the new breather screws...thus causing the compression problem and oil leak I'm experiencing after installing the new breather.

Why is the one end so small on the new screamin eagle breather screws?
Or do you think they are defective/poorly crafted screws?
Should the holes be the same on both side of the new screamin eagle breather screws?

It seems to me that the holes on both ends of the new breather screws should be the same diameter/size holes just like the old ones were.

Any information or advice you can give me would be very appreciated.

Hi,

I changed my stock air cleaner out to a new screamin eagle air cleaner kit on my 2002 1200 custom sportster.

When I when I returned from a 2 mile test drive I found oil all over the lower right side of my bike.

I started the bike again and looked for leaks with a flashlight.

Oil is definately leaking out of the lower area of the rear pushrod(at the bottom where the pushrod attaches to the motor)

What could have happened or failed?
Why would changing the air cleaner cause this...or is it just a coincidence and something else is wrong?

Answer -
Its just coincidence. The air cleaner has nothing to do with the pushrod cover.
Rotate the pushrod cover back and forth and see if it will reseat. If it doenst then you will have to remove the top end to put in new seals.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike

Answer
The hole is causing pressure to build up in the heads and probably causing your leak. It is not raising the compression. Take the kit back and have the dealer take a look at it. I think the holes should be bigger. The screws you mentioned might not be cut right.
