Motorcycle Repair: rebel oil leak, honda rebel 250, overflow tube
QuestionHi Chris,
I have a 1996 honda rebel 250 that I bought a few months ago. It only has 4000 mi. on it and I have not had any trouble, until...It got knocked over in my garage and fell on it's left side. I picked it up and checked it out and it looked fine! I took it for a short ride (4 miles) and when I returned I noticed oil leaking from (I think) the overflow tube. It stopped leaking shortly after I shut it off. Backtracking I noticed that at every stop and for a few feet from where I would take off, I could see spots of oil. I'm hoping it's nothing serious, but am afraid to ride it until I know more.
Thanks, Chris
AnswerHi Chris.
Check for any oil along the gaskets of each engine side cover. Something could have gotten cracked or broken loose, causing a leak. If no evidence of that, then try to run the bike and see if the problem repeats.
It is very likely that this is due to the tip-over and relocation of oil in the engine because of it. You may need to put a little bit of oil back in the engine to fill it, if it is really low.
If the problem continues then get it to a mechanic to check out in person.
Good luck and ride safe.
