Motorcycle Repair: Not getting spark, kawasaki 440, hi john

Question
I have a 1981 Kawasaki 440, it has been sitting for 5 years and I want to get it going again. I pulled the plug and turned it over but I didnt see a spark where should I start to get the spark back? Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi John.
Start with the ignition system; Fuse, wiring and coils; in that order.  Test the coils as per the proceedures in the repair manual.
If the bike was running when it was parked, then it should run again.......after the carbs are properly cleaned, the tank is resealed and fresh fuel is used in the bike and the ignition problem is fixed.

Cleaning the carbs and resealing the tank will be critical to prevent other problems when you get spark back.

Good luck and ride safe.
