Motorcycle Repair: shifting problem, honda shadow, overdriver

howdy mark. i'm having a small problem shifting. i have a 1984 honda shadow 700. i had to pull the motor. i did that successfully and put it all back together. afterwards, the bike was stuck in overdrive and i couldn't get it to shift out of overdriver. i pulled the covers and reinserted the shifter rod. now it will only shift between 3 different gears. i dont know what gears they are. but i do know it's not going into nuetral or over driver. i don't know what i'm doing wrong but i would really like it a lot better if i had all my gears. any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Why was the engine pulled?

What was done to the engine one out of the frame?

Was the shifting problems present before removing the engine for repairs?

Provide some history of maintenance and repairs, modifications, and any other details you can think of. We'll go from there.
