Motorcycle Repair: acceleration problems, acceleration problems, great shape

Question
Hi Chris, 1996 GSXR 1100, 17,000kms. Bike is mint and babied. I was away for a month on holiday, ran it the day I left and the day I returned. Took it out recently and it ran fine from idle to around 5000rpm after which it felt as though it was running on 3 cyl or was fuel starved. Hesitation like it wants to go but can't. Fearing some old/bad gas I hit the freeway for a fast 200kms and it began to clear up only to return again. Put some high test in and still the problem persisted. Checked the petcock filter and checked/cleaned the plugs and K&N filter, all is well. All coil wiring and plug wire appear to be in great shape and routed correctly. Aside from that, the only mod is a Yosh RS-3 header and can. Any ideas would really be appreciated, thanks, Dallas

Answer
Hi Dallas.

Most likely, there is a bit of varnish in the fuel system.  Since the bike didn't set for more than a month, then it shouldn't be too bad.

Add a bottle of fuel treatment with jet fuel (STP is best) and run the bike.
If that doesn't clear it up, then the carbs will need cleaning, the tank resealed or cleaned and the fuel line replaced.

Good luck and ride safe.
