Motorcycle Repair: starter problem, starter solenoid, dead insects

Question
Mark,
i have sporadic starting problems w/ a 1990 kawasaki ZR550 w/ 13,000miles. I've had 3 different symptoms so far: push starter button and 1) nothing happens;or 2) clicking sound under saddle; or3)something happens that makes the rpm needle go up to 1500 but engine won't crank. If i push start it, it will be starting fine after that for a few times and then problems again. Thank you for your much appreciated advice.

Answer
Hi Alan,

Check for loose battery cables (all ends).

Check battery voltage and specific gravity. a weak or defective battery may cause these symptoms.

Check starter button switch contacts for corrosion, burned or pitted surfaces, or other non-conductors such as dead insects or webs.

Check starter solenoid connections. Check solenoid's internally for corroded or burned contacts. Requires desoldering and disassembly.

Check safety switch connections; clutch, sidestand, and neutral.

Check ignition switch operation and connections.

If all checks ok, have CDI/ECM inspected.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
