Motorcycle Repair: 2004 gsxr 600 engine stutter then stall, suzuki gsxr 600, 2004 gsxr 600

Question
Hi Chris,
As a new rider recently I purchase a used Suzuki gsxr 600 that each time I start the engine in cold weather the engine will run normal for 15 to 30 secs then all the sudden it will stutter and choke then shut off by itself.(as if it ran out of gas) When restarted the second time engine will almost run fine but the first ignition almost always ends with sudden shut off wtihin 20 secs. The used dealership told me its normal for a fuel injection bike to do this for the injection to get warm. Is this true? It seems i always have to start twice every time i start riding in cold mornings.
Thanks for the answers.
Sincerely,
John

Answer
Hi John.

I have never heard of ANY engine type that functions like that as a normal operation.  Is the choke on that bike manual or automatic?  If you have an automatic choke, then that is likely the problem.  If the choke is manual, then it could be a matter of the engine needing a proper tune-up or the injectors being a bit dirty.  Try running some fuel treatment with fuel injector cleaner in it (available at any auto parts store) in the fuel.

Also, make sure the tune-up is done on the bike.  Check everything against the specs in the repair manual (get one if you don't have one).

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
