Motorcycle Repair: 83 GL1100 front brakes drag, axle nut, gl1100

Question
When removing the wheels to install new tires, I mistakely backed the front axle nut out until I noticed that this was opening the distance between the forks at the bottom. I tightened the axle nut back up, dropped the axle retaining caps. Tire change done, no brake problem but now the LT fork leaks. Removed forks, had shop check for bent tubes and reseal. Assembled bike. When caliper hardware is loose, normal drag. Significant drag when hardware is tightened.

Answer
Hi Carl.

It is possible that something is still misaligned or possibly assembled improperly on the caliper end or a possible missing spacer on the axle.  It wouldn't take much to throw things off.

I think that a spacer is the most likely probability.  Spacers are not very thick; usually about 1/8th inch or so thick.  That would also allow overtightening and, oftentimes, over-closure of the forks  Had it happen to me a couple of times.  Very frustrating.

Check to make sure that nothing is amiss with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
