Motorcycle Repair: clutch on 84 gl 1200, clutch lever, gl 1200

Question
 Chris,I have to let the bike warm up for several minutes before I try to put it in gear. It tries to take off otherwise. Even after warming up it klunks when putting it into 1st gear. The bike has been sitting up for about 4 years now.It had this problem before it was parked, but it is a lot worse now. The bike has about 90K miles. I've bled the line and put a new seal on the piston in the cluth slave cylinder. The clutch lever feels firm and has the same resistance every time it's operated. Also, I have always done an oil and filter change every 3K. Thanks for your help. Gayle

Answer
Hi Gayle.

You may want to check for an air bubble in the clutch line at the banjo fitting at the master cylinder.  Here's the proceedure;

1) Bleed the clutch line like normal.

2) With a rag placed over anything near the master cylinder that you don't want to get hydraulic fluid on (and while wearing safety glasses), place a wrench on the banjo fitting and depress the clutch lever.

3) With the clutch lever depressed, crack the banjo fitting loose and retighten without releasing the clutch lever.

4) After the banjo fitting is tightened up again, check the clutch.  If it is not as it should be, then repeat steps 2 and 3, but no more than 3 or 4 times.  And make sure that the fluid level does not get low in the master cylinder.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
