Motorcycle Repair: 1991 CT70, overflow tube, air passages

Question
Hi, I have a 91 CT 70 with 100 miles. I cleaned the carb and jets but it runs very rich with the exaust looking sooty. When I drive it, it wont accelerate past 10 MPH unless I remove the whole air cleaner assembly then, it runs although still rich. What do you think the cause might be and what steps would you take? Also, do you know what the float level should be? Thanks, Jeff

Answer
Jeff, all I have for specs is 10.7mm for the 1978-79 models. Could be the same for later ones, as most had plastic floats that are not adjustable.

Did you check to see that the idle or main jet didn't loosen up and fall out into the bowl?

Does it lose fuel out of the overflow tube?

Recheck the carb float bowl and carb body for plugged air passages that may be causing this. The air bleed passages in the carb throat must be clear and the small cross drilled holes in the main jet holder must be clear, as well.
