Motorcycle Repair: gsxr 750 2002, water in the fuel, 5 more minutes

Question
i was riding my bike on the highway and i was in traffic and the bike cut off. It started right back up and i rode it for about 5 more minutes and it turned off again. At first i thought it was overheating but the temperature was reading 175 degrees. It would not start up until the next day. Then the next day it did the same thing. Can you give me an idea as to what is wrong with it? It only has 9000 mileson it.

Answer
Hi Cynister.

This is sounding like you have developed some kind of short or, more likely, a heat related problem with the ignition coils.  Check with the dealership and find out if there has been a recall notice, regarding that problem, for your year and model.

Follow the test proceedures in the repair manual and check the coils.  Then run the bike til it dies like it did before and immediately test the coils again (this requires you to have your multimeter with you).  It is most likely that you have gotten a bad component.

Another possibility is water in the fuel.  Check for that as well.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
