Motorcycle Repair: Charging System, regulator rectifier, hondamatic

Question
I have a 1979 Hondamatic CM400A. When I turn the key in the ignition nothing lights up at all. But I can kickstart it. Then the problem is that it has to warm up for about 10 minutes in order for it to even drive. The lights are very dim and I have to drive for about 10 to 15 miles before the blinkers even work. I want to know if the problem lies with the regulator/rectifier, the battery or both. I appreciate your response.

Answer
Hi Phillip,

The charging system will have to be tested to know which component(s) are defectiuve, if any.

Testing is simple with a multimeter (volt-ohm meter).

Get a copy of the service manual. It has illustrated test and repair procedures.

Visit the following website and follow their "Fault Finding Chart":

I return test and repair tech files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested in my instructions.
